I fell asleep while I was waiting for
My zone to load. When I woke up a short while later the gate
Was empty, the plane was gone and I was stranded. US Air charged me $1156 to rebook the soonest flight to Denver to be with my family at Thanksgiving. I've talked with everyone who would talk to me at US Air with the same results. They are so big they don't have to care. They don't even have a phone number to customer relations. The general attitude was tough luck buddy! At the very least they could fake that they care. I don't think it is that uncommon to have a passenger fall asleep in the gate maybe the airlines could try alittle common courtesy and take a two minute walk through the gate if someone is missing from a flight with a boarding pass.

Re: 50 states in less than 50 years

Great post. You are fortunate enough to have visited the entire US, all 50 states. I am not Us, i come from India but i have the same passion of traveling but i haven't traveled all the 28 states in my country. I also like what you mentioned about the dream job as a travel editor. I really wish i get to work in such a job which will help me travel across the globe. Thanks for the writing. I wish good luck with your future adventures and hope you post them here!

Re: 50 states in less than 50 years

My goal was all 50 states in 50 years and I was able to accompilsh that goal at age 50. I had three states remaining, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Alabama. My wife and flew into New Orlenes and rented a car for our "Redneck Rivera" tour. That was year of Hurricane Gustof and we managed to stay about a day or two ahead of it. What a trip! Fortunately my wife loves to travel and has a good sense of humor. My next goal is to visit all seven continents before I die. I have four down and three to go (Australia, Antartica, and South America).

Re: 50 states in less than 50 years

Thank you for providing an independent definition of what constitutes a "visit" to a state.

My wife and I have debated this for years. My interpretation has always been much more liberal but I now humbly submit it's hard to argue with someone who's actually been to all 50 states. Looking forward to reading the re-visits of each one.

Re: Save the miles

I spoke with Tom (United agent) this a.m ( 10/11/11) regarding trying to re-instate my husbands miles which expired
on 9/1/11. Name: Harry L. I don't know how to
get the documentation (letter from his M.D) unless I fax or mail it to you. What do you suggest
I do to show proof of what I have just stated. We used the Seattle CityPass on a trip last year and over the course of two days we went to the Seattle Aquarium, Woodland Park Zoo, Museum of Flight, Space Needle, and took an hour-long Harbor Tour, and we didn't even use the whole pass. Well worth getting, particularly if it's your first trip to the city.

Re: Estes Park Super 8 one of TripAdvisor’s Top 10 Dirtiest Hotels in U.S.

I bookmarked this site more than a year ago and still I visit the article to fresh up. At times I could count 5 days per month when you could breath clean air. The fact that the volcano spews 14 tons of particulate matter into the air and travels to the Kona side is enough to give you asthma as it did with me.

Re: Five restaurants to try in Albuquerque

Really good story this is, specially on Flying Stars deserts. I recently dined at the one on Rio Grande Blvd. The salad, albeit pricey, was very good, and the rolls were nice, but they made THE worst posole anywhere -- undercooked hominy, in what tasted like Campbell's tomato soup with a dash of red chile powder.

Do I ever miss the Sanitary Tortilla Co.! Best sopaipillas ever -- you practically had to nail them to the table to keep them from floating away -- and the red chile was outrageously good.

Re: Carless in Colorado, Part II: This is how we do it

what a nice thing to say! like I said, it hasn't been easy, and I'll talk some more about that in future posts, but overall, I'd do it again, and I hope I don't ever have to own a car again!

Re: Carless in Colorado, Part II: This is how we do it

Great article! It's really heartening to see people doing this. I've commuted by bicycle for over 40 years, lived in Central Denver, refused to buy my kids a car when they were in high school, and now use my car as little as possible. That little Toyota is 18 years old and should easily go another 10 since I only put a few thousand miles on it every year.
